International Trade Basics
This module
addresses the key basic international trade
issues that will be covered in more depth in
subsequent modules. The module provides a
solid overview of issues companies should
consider when pursuing international trade.

International Trade Support Programs for
Virginia Companies
Virginia
companies considering trading
internationally can access a variety of free
or subsidized services from Federal, State
and university based resources. The module
explains the programs available and the
support services they provide in addition to
some tactics and strategies when trying to
maximize the benefits of using these
resources.

International Marketing and Sales
Once you
decide to sell into a new international
market, there are some basic issues,
strategies and tactics that come into play.
The module provides details on these issues
but is NOT intended to try to teach how to
sell. The module provides information that
can be combined with internal sales
processes to take a domestic effort
internationally.

International Logistics
Simply put,
logistics is the movement of commodities and
goods from a seller to a buyer. This module
provides an overview of the international
logistics “chain” and movement including a
discussion of the process, “players” , INCO
terms, paperwork and comparisions between
domestic and international freight movement.
The module does NOT teach how to fill out
international paperwork for shipments.

International Finance and Banking
What is a
“Letter of Credit” and how will using one
affect your ability to get paid for
international sales? What are other payment
options available and what are the pros and
cons of each. This module provides a good
overview of payment types and foreign
exchange considerations.

Foreign Trade Zones and Customs Bonded
Warehouses
If you are an
importer or someone who is importing
components and exporting a finished product
you should know about the tax, cashflow and
other positive benefits to be realized from
utilizing a Foreign Trade Zone or a Customs
Bonded Warehouse. The discussion of these
two tools will center on a foreign trade
zone in western Virginia but the issues are
wherever they are located.

Export Compliance Issues
Key issues
related to staying in compliance with
applicable export rules and regulations is
presented by Jim Loux of Allegheny Brokerage
Company, a professional U.S. Customs Broker

previous modules content and on practical

Key issues
related to international legal
considerations, including IP protection and
international agreements, are presented by
Peer Segelke, Esquire of LeClair Ryan law
firm. This module is a great introduction to
key issues but should not be a substitute
for seeking professional legal assistance in
international trade.
